Michael L. Reed

Hey T, I did as you asked

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 7, 2007, 9:34 PM
I want to caution you though, I have kept backup copies offline and if you ever get out of hand in a parking lot again, or if I met a suspicious death even vaguely connected with you... They will be released!!! Think my friend of the concept of thoughtcrime, don't be a history editing Winston Smith, be the rebel Winston Smith! Remember who has shared the path you are walking...

“The broad mass of the nation … will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one.” — Adolf Hitler, in his 1925 book Mein Kampf.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” — Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels.

The Valentine DA logo is a bloody good excuse for calling DA a lamer teenie site.

But I won't :-)

'nuff said.

I just received an early Christmas gift. I got the Anakin Force FX Lightsaber woot! I have wanted one for the longest time but just refused to spend those kind of dollars on it. The best gift is one you want but cannot bear to buy for yourself.

Okay I must admit to geekiness but damn [link] to anyone other than a Star Wars hater, these things are mucho sweet. I give them my glowing heh recommendation.

Okay I hate chain mail, chain emails, etc. but since I was tagged by I will respond, but no one else should get the idea, only she can get away with it.

1. My deepest darkest desire is to be immortal, not for the power thing, but for the experience. I would do anything that would not involve harm to others to achieve it.
2. There are some people I would consider harming to achieve it.
3. I have never learned anything from losing, and I think all the platitudes regarding the concept are to make losers feel better. (except that I have learned you do not learn from losing, which makes the point semi-moot)
4. I do not always win, and when I do not, it is usually my fault.
5. My wife is my best friend in the world, and even if she were just a male buddy she would be number 1. But I miss having a buddy to hang out with, I hate not being able to run over and see *wayseeker, Jason Stephanovich, or Mike Fear.
6. I quit a job once because they wanted me to lie to a client, I could be very financially secure right now if I had not, and sometimes I regret it.
7. I wish I would never have met my ex-wife and I curse the fact that one traffic light being different could have avoided the worst part of my life, and odds on, the worst part of hers.
8. I have no respect for someone that preaches their beliefs then asks for money.
9. On a daily basis I look in the mirror and ponder that I still do not understand why or how that =sya could love me.
10. I refuse to suffer fools or drunkards. Both conditions can be rectified and I refuse to be put out by those unwilling to do so.
11. While I could easily be a Paladin, the scary thing is that it would be much easier to be evil and I suspect more fun as well.
12. I respect less than 1% of the users on DA, but they have a higher rate of respect from me than AOL users.
13. I think that the problem with children today is the blindly foolish concept of teaching them that they are all special, and that they can do not wrong. All it does it create monsters.
14. I have never felt as if I have lived up to my potential, but I have exceeded it several times almost miraculously.
15. =sya is why I believe in a God.
16. When I was single, I once participated in adultery. I have never forgiven myself. But to be honest I think maybe I should have cheated on my ex at least on the many times I was accused of it.
17. My biggest failing is laziness because I have to force myself to overcome it daily to get anything done. But on the otherhand my willpower is amazing because it lets me overcome my laziness.
18. In 2004, I voted Libertarian, and think that anyone who wanted Bush or Kerry to win the last election is an idiot. But I do not think the libertarians would have been better, just maybe not the same bad.
19. My mother had a very strong anti-fighting rule when I was growing up, even she realized it was stupid and relented by 5th grade when I came home bloody for the millionth time, that was the last time I lost a fair physical confrontation (and by fair I mean less than 3 of them). Parents who think their kids should not fight, even in self defense are entirely wrong, all kids think is that gives them someone they can safely impress others on.
20. I think sex is underrated.

Okay your turn!

Freeware leads to Freewill

One of my favorite words in the English language for its meaning is free. Being a computer junkie, another of my favorite words is ware, combine them both and the world is a better place. I have found a few lately that are above and beyond the standards, applications that exceed the level of commercial software in terms of function being written by dedicated people who want to practice their skills for themselves and then share it with others.

Today let me tell you about VLC Media Player. Quite simply, uninstall all the other video players on your system, and download it. You can find it at VideoLan.org. It is the very best of the best in terms of speed, options, and presetup codecs. Have I mentioned that it is available for Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Debian GNU/Linux, Mandrake Linux, Fedora Core, Familiar Linux, YOPY/Linupy, Zaurus, SuSE Linux, Red Hat Linux and WinCE / PocketPC. Oh yeah if you want to download the source code and compile it yourself it is also available for NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris, QNX, Gentoo Linux, and Crux Linux.

19 supported Operating Systems, to quote one of the few really funny Adam Sandler lines, is "Not too shabby". The features can be found at VLC Features. An 8MB download for a video player may seem large (unless you consider the bloated MS player) but considering the insane amount of file types this app supports it is actually small. I have yet to find any video files that this did not support, and you can add the one or two codecs it does not have rather easily at their webpage, there is decent documentation and the entire app feels "right". This is before we even begin to cover the fact that it does handle streams, can act as a streaming server, and does it all with a handy and useful wizard for the newbie.

In terms of installation, usage, documentation and functionality I give this little app a 91% rating. When I read through the comments on some of the open source sites about it, all the complaints I can find are from people who cannot read help files, or those who think AOL is the internet. The quick description would be
VideoLAN Client (VLC) is a media player for Unix, Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, QNX, and PocketPC. It can play most audio and video codecs (MPEG 1/2/4, DivX, WMV, Vorbis, AC3, AAC, etc.), has support for VCD, SVCD, and DVD (with menus), and can read or dump streams from a network source (HTTP, UDP, DVB, MMS, etc.). It can also act as a server and send streams through the network, with optional support for audio and video transcoding.
